Chapter One
Josh
From the moment I met Lizzie St. John in that bar last year, I knew she was different. She’d be there with Megan Harrison, now Megan Pierce, my brother Max’s wife. I was immediately drawn in by her no-bullshit attitude – she didn’t take crap from anyone. I’d never wanted anyone as much as I’d wanted her. She saw right through me that night, and even though she was drunk, my dick got hard the moment she touched me. I knew I shouldn’t take advantage of her, but man, her hands were all over me. Yeah, she was a cat in heat, and I wanted the same thing.
The woman was built for me – tall, at least five eight, with legs that ran forever, and her funky hair – it was blond with some different colored highlights. She had perfect light brown eyes, but not many people knew that because she wore colored contact lenses. The moment we connected on that dance floor, I was a goner. Yup, that woman was all mine, even if it was only for one night. I loved her scent, her smile, her kinky ways. Sex was never issue, she took as much as I gave, if not more. But trust was – she she held back,
and didn’t talk about future – said she didn’t believe in it.
Holding her up against the wall, anchoring her, I felt her legs go limp against me. We were breathing hard, but I held her so she wouldn’t fall. She made me crazy, and I had lost all control the moment we’d closed the hotel door. No woman had ever made me feel like that, ever. I leaned into her shoulder and kissed her damp neck. “Damn girl, that was hot.” I felt her smile against my cheek.
“Let’s do that again, but without the clothes on,” she had said.
“Hold on – bedroom.” I was still semi-hard inside her, already hoping that round two would be wilder than the first. I loved sex and knowing that she was crazy about it as much as I was made me want to please her even more. Women understood what it meant to be with me; I wasn’t the relationship kind of guy. I gave the woman my undivided attention for one night, and that was all they got. But not with Lizzie. I wanted to taste her, make her body sing again, again, and again. I wanted to hear her scream my name. She was my addiction that night, and I couldn’t get enough of her. That one night would never be enough for me, never enough to satisfy the hunger I had for her.
Thinking back at that night, it was the most fantas-tic night I’d ever had. It was wild and crazy, and I’d wanted more, but I wouldn’t get it. All because of one stupid move from one persistent girl who couldn’t keep her lips off me – the result of a damn bet she’d made while at a bachelorette party. Yeah, I loved women of all kinds, so when this drunk brunette who I had never met before sat on my lap and kissed me, well, what was I supposed to do? That’s when Lizzie walked into the bar and saw the woman kissing me. My friends and I were laughing at the stupid things women did, and I didn’t realize that Lizzie had seen everything. When she came up and slapped me across the face, turned the other way and never looked back, I realized what a mistake I’d made.
I’d always loved women. I loved how they felt. I liked how they smelled. Many in my entourage were only after what we Pierce brothers could give them – power and money. It helped that my brothers and I had the looks to go with that power. But I would trade all of it if I could win Lizzie back.
Lizzie St. John protected herself from everything and anything. We didn’t talk personal shit, we just en-joyed each other. And damn did I appreciate her, all night long. I spent enough time with her to say that she got to me and I wanted more, needed more. But I’d screwed up. Shit! If I could turn back time I would, but Lizzie didn’t want anything to do with me, and I wasn’t sure what to do to win her back. She refused my calls and avoided me every time there was a get-together with Megan and Max.
I sat behind my desk on the top floor of Pierce Tower, and all I could think about was her. I had to talk to Megan – she could give me some insight. I adored my sister-in-law – Max couldn’t have found a better woman for himself.
“Josh, why so gloomy? It’s a beautiful day outside, what has your boxers in a knot?”
I looked up and saw Max leaning on the doorframe of my office. The man was crazy happy; I’d never seen him like that before, especially given that just a few months ago, I’d thought I may have lost him. The Mariotto brothers had shot him, not once but twice. If it wasn’t for Megan’s quick reaction, we could have lost him. I owed that girl my life for saving my older brother. I smiled at him. “What’s up? Bragging about how happy you are and rubbing it in?”
Max walked in and sat down in the chair across from me as he crossed his right leg over his left one with a massive grin on his face. “Damn right. I have a beautiful wife, and two babies that will be here any day. What more could a man ask for?”
“It’s sickening to see how happy you are. Who would have thought that the great Max Pierce would be content with one woman?”
“One day it will happen to you, you’ll see. You seemed miles away just now though. Problems? Any-thing I should know? Anything I can help you with?”
Seeing my brother being so happy, I wanted to know what it felt like to be in love. I wanted that kind of love. I wanted a best friend, lover, wife… I wanted to know what it was like having someone who cared for you, who would put herself in danger to save you. A love that was so powerful that no matter what, that person would be there to protect you.
Megan didn’t care about a man’s bank account. She’d fallen in love with the man who the world didn’t know, not the arrogant businessman he showed the people around him. She’d seen right through him, through his arrogance, and his controlling mannerisms.
“The thing is, I was thinking about Lizzie,” I said to Max. “There’s just something about her that attracts me to her, and I can’t get her off my mind.”
“So you like her.”
“You could say that. Not to get into details, but I screwed up, and I don’t know how to fix it.”
“I knew you guys hit it off, but she didn’t say much about it either. What I’ve learned is that Lizzie looks out for herself. Megan told me that her ex-boyfriend did a number on her. She protects her heart with steel bars, and she doesn’t date. If you get a chance to get to know her first instead of banging her, she may let you in.”
“What did her ex do to her that destroyed any oth-er man’s chance to get close to her?”
Max smiled at me – he knew I loved sex as much as he did, and that I never dated much either. I usually just got my fix and moved on. He could probably tell that this woman must have impressed me for me to still be thinking about her like that.
“That’s her story to tell you, not mine, but if you want Lizzie, then I would suggest being there for her as a friend.”
I watched as my brother got up and walked away. “How can I do that when she doesn’t want to talk to me? I’ve tried, Max, and she shuts me down every time.”
Max turned and smiled at me. “Are you asking for advice? What, the lover boy, Josh Pierce, can’t get a woman to talk to him? You lost your touch, bro?”
“If you’re going to mock me about it, just forget about it.”
“Listen Josh, Lizzie doesn’t trust easily. You need to get her to trust you; if you had it good once, you can have it again. All I can say is that girl got burned badly by her ex. If you did something, anything – it may not be anything to you, but it clearly was to her. You saw her a few times when Megan and I got back together, then something happened for her to turn away from you. I’m only going to say this once, so lis-ten good bro! I know she still has feelings for you. I can see it, and I can sense it. Whatever you did or didn’t do, explain it to her, find her, track her down and tell her. Make her listen to reason.”
I looked at my brother. Max Pierce knew every-thing about people – he checked out anyone who got close enough. I was sure he’d had Lizzie checked out, and that he had a file on her, because that was who
Max Pierce was. He protected the people he loved and wanted to know everything about the people who got close to his family or friends. That was a fact, but I wasn’t going to injure my pride and ask for the file. Knowing that I’d hurt someone, someone that I was starting to fall for, was eating me up inside. Not many people knew about the fling Lizzie and I had. It hadn’t lasted long, because we men are stupid when we have alcohol. We do ridiculous things and don’t think about the consequence of our actions.
“I was stupid and drunk and let some other girl sit on my lap and kiss me, and thought it was harmless. It was a bachelorette party, the girl was getting married the next day, and it was a dare from her friends. I didn’t want to, but the guys…well you know. It was stupid because I knew Lizzie was coming. I shouldn’t have done that. Since then, she doesn’t want to hear me out.”
“Well, I would suggest you go to her, get her to talk to you again, and this time woo her. Don’t jump in the sack or have sex against the wall or anything, just be there for her as a friend.”
“Thanks Max, I appreciate this, and you’re right. It’s time that I track her down.” I watched my brother pull out his phone. He smiled at what he was reading, his face lighting up. I watched him type something back, knowing it was Megan, because that woman had him wrapped around her finger. Anyone could see how much he adored her.
“Tell you what Josh, come for supper tonight. I’m leaving in about 30 minutes, and Megan told me that Lizzie is there and she needs my advice on some-thing.”
“Sure, but advice on what? What could Lizzie pos-sibly want advice on?” I stood up, thinking that Lizzie may be in trouble and that I wanted to be there for her, to protect her from anyone who tried to hurt her. I’d try to tamp my feelings down for now.
“Don’t know. So, 30 minutes?” Max looked at his brother, knowing that if anything happened to Megan, he would be the first one to jump also.
“Got it, that should give me time to wrap this up.” I watched Max leave my office.
